What it is

AWS Billing and Cost Management is the set of console pages and tools for paying your AWS bill and understanding, controlling, and optimizing costs. Billing shows invoices, payments, and charges per service and account; Cost Management adds analysis and controls: Cost Explorer, AWS Budgets, Cost Anomaly Detection, cost allocation tags, cost categories, data exports of detailed cost and usage data, and the Pricing Calculator. With AWS Organizations, consolidated billing gives one bill for all member accounts.

ML (Machine learning)Software that learns patterns from example data to make predictions or decisions, instead of following rules written by hand. A model is first trained on data, then used to make predictions on new data, which is called inference.Glossary entry workloads make costs move quickly: GPU (Graphics processing unit)A processor with thousands of small cores that run many calculations in parallel. GPUs speed up machine learning, graphics, and video work; EC2 instance families such as P and G include them.Glossary entry training jobs, always-on endpoints, notebooks left running, and per-token charges for foundation models. Choose these tools when a question asks to see where ML money goes, set cost limits, or be alerted to unexpected spend (MLA-C02 tasks 4.2.5, 4.2.7, 4.2.9, and 4.2.10).

Concepts and features

  • Cost allocation tags: tag resources (for example project=churn-model, team=ds) and activate the tags in the Billing console so costs can be grouped by them. SageMaker AI jobs, endpoints, and Bedrock resources such as Provisioned Throughput support tags.
  • Cost Explorer: charts of costs and usage over time, filtered by service, account, AWS RegionA separate geographic area where AWS runs its services, such as us-east-1 in Northern Virginia, made up of several Availability Zones. Most resources live in one Region; you choose Regions for latency, data residency, and the services you need.Glossary entry, usage type, or tag, with forecasts (see the AWS Cost Explorer tutorial).
  • AWS Budgets: a cost or usage limit with alerts when actual or forecasted spend crosses it, and budget actions that apply an IAM or SCP (Service control policy)An AWS Organizations policy that sets the maximum permissions for IAM users and roles in member accounts. It grants nothing by itself, and it does not apply to the management account.Glossary entry, or stop EC2 and RDS instances, when a threshold is reached (see AWS Budgets). This is how to set cost quotas for a team or project.
  • Cost Anomaly Detection: machine learning watches spend per service, account, cost category, or tag and alerts on unusual spikes, such as a forgotten GPU endpoint or a runaway token bill, through email or SNS.
  • Data exports (and the Cost and Usage Report): the most detailed hourly cost and usage data delivered to S3, for analysis with Athena or dashboards in Amazon Quick Sight.
  • Cost categories: rules that group costs into your own categories, such as "training" and "inference".

Where ML costs come from, and how to cut them

Cost Ways to reduce it
Training jobs Managed Spot training, right-sized instances, early stopping, fewer tuning jobs
Real-time endpoints Autoscaling, serverless or asynchronous inference for spiky traffic, multi-model endpoints, Inferentia instances, Savings Plans
Notebooks and development Stop idle notebooks and apps, use lifecycle configurations
Foundation model tokens Smaller models, shorter prompts, prompt caching, batch inference, capped output tokens
Vector stores and embeddings Embed only changed documents, lower-cost vector storage (such as Amazon S3 Vectors) for infrequent queries

Security, resilience, performance, and cost

Security

Billing access is controlled by IAM permissions for the billing and cost management actions; in an organization, the management account controls consolidated billing and which tags are activated. Budget actions can restrict permissions automatically.

Resilience

Not applicable in the usual sense: billing data is managed by AWS; exports to S3 keep your own copy for audit.

Performance

Cost data updates several times a day, not in real time, so pair budgets and anomaly detection with CloudWatch alarms on usage metrics for faster signals.

Cost

Most features are free; some, such as Cost Explorer API (Application programming interface)A defined way for one program to ask another for data or actions, such as a set of HTTPS requests and responses. Every AWS service is controlled through its API, which the console, the CLI, and the SDKs call for you.Glossary entry requests and budget actions beyond the free allowance, have small charges.

Monitoring

Budgets and Cost Anomaly Detection send alerts through email and SNS; CloudTrail records billing console and API actions.

Comparisons

Need Choose
See which project's training jobs cost the most Cost allocation tags in Cost Explorer
Alert, or restrict permissions, when a team's spend passes a limit AWS Budgets with budget actions
Catch an unexpected spike without setting a threshold Cost Anomaly Detection

ML cost control: which tool?
  • See the cost
    • Cost per model or team leads to Activated cost allocation tags
    • Trend and forecast of spend leads to Cost Explorer
    • Hourly line items in S3 leads to Data exports with Athena
  • Control the cost
    • Hard limit for a project's spend leads to Budgets with budget actions
    • Unexpected GPU or token spike leads to Cost Anomaly Detection
  • Reduce the cost
    • Training leads to Managed Spot training
    • Steady inference leads to SageMaker AI Savings Plans

Key takeaways

  • Billing and Cost Management covers bills, consolidated billing, and the cost tools: Cost Explorer, Budgets, Cost Anomaly Detection, tags, categories, and exports.
  • Tag ML resources and activate the tags to see cost per project or team.
  • Budgets with actions set cost quotas; Cost Anomaly Detection catches surprises.
  • Know the main ML cost drivers and how to reduce each.
