What it is

AWS Glue DataBrew is a visual data preparation service: analysts, data scientists, and engineers clean and normalize data without writing code. You open a dataset in a grid, see value distributions, and apply point-and-click transformations, choosing from more than 250 (remove nulls, replace missing values, fix formats, split and merge columns, encode categories, and natural language steps such as splitting sentences). DataBrew is serverless, so it handles terabytes without clusters, and it writes the prepared data to Amazon S3.

Choose DataBrew when a question asks to prepare or clean data visually, with no code, repeat the same steps on new data on a schedule, or profile data quality, for analytics or ML (Machine learning)Software that learns patterns from example data to make predictions or decisions, instead of following rules written by hand. A model is first trained on data, then used to make predictions on new data, which is called inference.Glossary entry (MLA-C02 tasks 1.2.1 and 1.3.1).

Concepts and features

  • Dataset: points to the data: files in Amazon S3, tables in the AWS Glue Data Catalog, Amazon Redshift, or JDBC databases.
  • Project: an interactive session on a sample of the dataset, where you try transformations and see a preview before and after each step.
  • Recipe: the saved list of transformation steps, versioned and reusable on other datasets with the same structure.
  • Recipe job: runs a recipe over the full dataset and writes the output to S3 (CSV, Apache ParquetAn open-source columnar file format for analytics that stores compressed columns along with the schema. Querying Parquet files with Amazon Athena scans less data than CSV or JSON, so it is faster and cheaper.Glossary entry, JSON (JavaScript Object Notation)A text format for structured data made of name-and-value pairs and lists, such as {"bucket": "logs"}. IAM policies, most AWS API responses, and many CloudFormation templates are written in JSON.Glossary entry, and other formats), on demand or on a schedule.
  • Profile job: computes statistics for each column (missing values, distinct values, distributions, outliers, correlations) so you can spot problems before training.
  • Data quality rules: rulesets checked during profile jobs, such as "no more than 1% missing values in amount".
  • PII (Personally identifiable information)Information that can identify a person, alone or combined with other data, such as a name, email address, or passport number. Amazon Macie finds PII in Amazon S3.Glossary entry handling: detect personally identifiable information and mask, hash, encrypt, redact, or remove it before data is used for training (task 1.2.8).

Security, resilience, performance, and cost

Security

IAM roles control which data DataBrew can read and write; outputs are encrypted with SSE (Server-side encryption)Encryption that a service applies when it stores your data and removes when you read it back. Amazon S3 encrypts every new object with SSE-S3 by default; SSE-KMS uses keys in AWS KMS instead.Glossary entry-S3 or KMS keys; jobs can reach data sources in a VPC through Glue connections. Use the PII transformations to mask sensitive columns.

Resilience

DataBrew is a managed, serverless Regional service; jobs can retry on failure, and recipes and outputs in S3 make runs repeatable.

Performance

Projects work on a sample for fast interaction; jobs process the whole dataset and scale by the number of nodes you allow.

Cost

You pay for interactive sessions while you work in a project and for job node hours when recipes and profiles run. Stop idle sessions, profile a sample, and schedule jobs only as often as the data changes.

Monitoring

Job runs report to Amazon CloudWatch and EventBridge; CloudTrail records the API (Application programming interface)A defined way for one program to ask another for data or actions, such as a set of HTTPS requests and responses. Every AWS service is controlled through its API, which the console, the CLI, and the SDKs call for you.Glossary entry calls.

AWS Glue DataBrew: is it the answer?
  • Points to DataBrew
    • Clean data with no code, point and click leads to DataBrew recipe
    • Same cleaning every night on new files leads to Scheduled recipe job
    • Column statistics before training leads to Profile job
    • Mask PII columns without code leads to DataBrew PII transformations
  • Points elsewhere
    • Export the flow to SageMaker Pipelines leads to Data Wrangler in Canvas
    • Complex joins over petabytes in Spark leads to AWS Glue ETL or EMR
    • Fail an ETL run when quality rules break leads to AWS Glue Data Quality

Key takeaways

  • DataBrew is serverless, visual data preparation with more than 250 transformations, for users who don't want to write code.
  • Projects explore a sample; recipes save the steps; recipe jobs apply them to full datasets on a schedule; profile jobs measure data quality.
  • It can detect and mask PII; output goes to S3.
  • Pay for interactive sessions and job node hours.
